Outwell Montana 6

outwell-montana-6The Outwell Montana 6 is one of Outwell’s best selling family tents.  The reasons behind why Outwell Montana 6 tent sells so well can be summed up in two words performance and design.  Tents Camping have taken a look at why the Outwell Montana 6 tent has become a firm favourite with the British public and we give our opinion on it.

Outwell Montana 6-design

The Outwell Montana 6 has flexibility and convenience in its DNA.  It is designed to be either pitched fly sheet first or as one.    The advantage to the outer being pitched first is that no matter the weather conditions the inner is kept dry.  The main problem with the all-in-one system of pitching is that the Outwell Montana will be heavier and consequently more difficult to handle on your own.  However, once you become more experienced and have help in pitching the Montana you’ll be glad of this feature as it speeds everything up.

Inside the Outwell Montana 6 there are two bedroom areas capable, according to Outwell, of accommodating 6 people.  The bedrooms are spacious but we think that it might be  a bit tight for 6 adults.  Our tip is to take the measurement of the bedrooms and either mark out its footprint in either your living room or you back garden and see if you’re happy with the space.

One feature Tents Camping likes is the ability to turn the two bedrooms into one large sleeping area, which is great if you have young kids who may get up in the night.  Outside of the bedroom area there is a large well ventilated living area which can easy fit a table and chairs.

The Outwell Montana 6 enjoys Outwell’s Sealed Ground System, which is a fancy way of saying it has a sewn-in ground sheet, but it is a bit more than that.  The design of the ground sheet is great for stopping the rain from getting dirt and bugs from getting in!

A mark of a well designed tent, in our opinion, are the little things.  Small things which make you think, yes somebody understands camping.  The small things we like are the numerous storage pockets, the rigid plastic moulding for hanging either a light or heater and the height of the entrance porch.

Outwell Montana 6-Performance

The beauty of the Outwell Montana 6 is it ability to handle the worst of the British weather.   Being made from Outwell’s Outtex 5000 which is not only breathable but has a hydrostatic head of 5000mm.  In the UK around 1,500mm is considered waterproof for UK summertime usage, but if the wind gets up then the higher the hydrostatic head is the better it will cope with rain penetration.  So 5,000mm in our opinion should keep you dry!

How breathable the fabric is is always a priority when camping as there is nothing worse than having a tent which can cope with the worst rain storm but you still get wet from the condensation!  Outtex 5000 allows most of the moisture out but as anyone can tell you no fabric as has yet been developed to be totally breathable.  Outwell are aware of this so they have ingeniously incorporated ventilation systems all around the tent to cut down the condensation build up.  We particularly like the low level windows in the bedroom area.

Outwell Montana-Overall

The Outwell Montana 6 design has been about or over 4 years and in that time Outwell have tweak the tent’s design and performance to make it a very good family tent indeed.  Some may consider this tent to be a tad expensive but as with anything you get these days, you gte what you pay for.  The Outwell Montana 6 is one of the most stable and strongest tents in it class.  Its build quality is obvious from the moment you pitch the 6 man tent to the minute you take it down.

I bought the Outwell Montana 6 tent last year 08 and found it an excellent tent. We, 2 adults and 2 children, went camping last year in Devon and it coped well with the worst and best of the English summer!

My husband and two children helped put the tent up which took the best part of an hour, but once up it was perfect. Lots of room and very stable, although if i was to be picky I would certainly change the zip across the bottom of the main entrance which was a pain at times to close.

However, that is our only gripe about the tent, the Outwell felt very stable in high winds and it really did stop the heaviest rain I have seen in a long time. The tent was well ventilated which meant that there was little or no condensation. Lots of head room in the main living area which is ideal for cooking, etc

The Outwell Montana 6 is a well thought out tent which is great for long weekends or longer.

Do I get a prize for the first review?

We have just had a lovely weekend staying in this tent. This was the first outing of this tent, so before we set off we practised pitching the tent in the back garden (sad I know). I love the all-in-one feature of the pitching which means everything is kept dry and it certainly speeds up the pitching time.

We found the tent spacious and great for our needs, we one child and a dog (sometimes it is difficult to tell them apart!). I would happily recommend the Outwell Montana 6 and we are looking forward to using it in the summer when we are off to France!

Just bought the Outwell Montana 6. I haven’t managed to get it up yet as the ground is still frozen, but’ll let you know how it goes.

Brought our Montana 6 in a sale in 2010, first used it in the summer of 2011.

Loved it – until we went to France this summer and got caught up in a heavy storm which saw hailstones simply tear through the roof in no less than 11 areas.

We managed to patch the tent and continue our holiday – but I am desperately trying to contact Outwell now to complain. 🙁
