How to avoid Swine flu this summer?

I know this is jumping on the bandwagon a bit, but for many of us this summer Swine Flu is a real concern. If Swine Flu does kick off this summer I think the last place I would want to be is sitting cooped up in a plane breathing everyone else’s germs! So should we all forgo our summer holidays?

The obvious answer to this question is yes, but I say yes in that I’ll not be making plans for flying this year. Avoiding flying is my uneducated way of cutting down the risk of being exposed to the carriers of Swine Flu but am I going to sacrifice my holidays as a result of a knee jerk reaction? No. I’m going camping this year. Tents Camping has been aware for some time of steady growth in popularity of camping, but this year it is reaching fever pitch with many tent retailers reporting a dramatic increase in sales of tents and camping equipment.

The credit crunch has obviously impacted on many people and camping is great way to cut down the costs of a summer holiday without the getting into debt. So, with the combination of the health risks, ill- informed or otherwise, and the tightening purse strings it is easy to see why camping related sales are going through the roof.

Camping is very cost effective although your initial set up costs in buying a tent may be high – in the region of £700-£1,000 for a good quality family tent- it is still a lot cheaper than going on a traditional foreign holiday. Plus every time you use your tent you are reducing its cost per usage, making the savings greater every year. Compare this to the average family foreign holiday spend of around £4k and you’ll see that camping is a budgetary no brainer.

Whether tents and camping’s rise in popularity is down to the current economic climate or Swine Flu is immaterial, the fact of the matter is that camping is fantastic fun and a great way to bond with your family. Far too often we try and please our kids with the latest must have item, but what will stick in you child’s memory is not the moment when they got the DSi but the laughs they had around the camp fire or the time they worked together to get the tent up in the pouring rain – priceless!
